The Gachatha Coffee Factory is located in the slopes of the Aberdare Mountain Range, just north of Nairobi. The processing station has many standards in place to support sustainability – recirculation of water, water treatment to ensure no contamination in the local supply, and planting of indigenous species of trees to support bird populations in the area. This lot is compiled from small farmers at the milling station, where it is depulped, fermented overnight, and dried on raised tables depending on environmental conditions and volume of production. It is sorted by size and weight by screen, and finally is hand sorted to remove any missed defects or incorrectly sized beans.
You may have heard us say that the Kenyan coffee grading system doesn’t necessarily correlate with quality – this lot is a great example of that. Even though this is an AB coffee (the second largest screen size), it is fruitier, juicier, and louder than many AAs we’ve tried. If you like Kenyan coffees with a tropical, in your face profile, this is a great one to try.
